Findings from mapping work and quantitative analysis
Employment model
Paramedics may work across a small number of sites in a PCN or across different surgeries within a single practice. In some medium integration models, sites employ two or more paramedics that work differently. For example, one highly integrated paramedic may be directly employed and another PCN paramedic may work a limited number of sessions at the practice.
Qualifications
Paramedics may have some additional qualifications associated with their particular area of interest. Alternatively, they may be working towards or qualified to the level of Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) but some restrictions on the type of condition or patient they see are applied by the practices or the paramedic.
May or may not be prescribers.
Remit
Often work alongside ANPs (or experienced PGPs) with prescribing qualifications who provide mentorship/supervision.
Manage same day urgent care with clear exclusions. The paramedic may take on defined additional duties such as triage and/or assessing patients within their areas of expertise e.g. sexual health or diabetes.
Paramedics in medium integration sites tend to carry out more home visits than those in high integration sites. In medium complexity models, these may include visits to housebound patients and to care homes.
